Synopsis
The Winter Long is the eighth novel in the October Daye series. It opens during a rare period of calm in the Kingdom of the Mists under Queen Arden Windermere, which Toby finally allows herself to enjoy until Simon Torquill, the fae lord who once cursed her into fish form, reappears unannounced at her door. Simon claims that his long-ago transformation of Toby was in fact meant to protect her, and that he remains bound by a geas he cannot break, but before he can explain further he attacks Toby's roommate Jazz and flees. Investigating Simon's return, Toby learns that he is married to her own mother, Amandine, and begins trying to identify the mysterious employer who has been directing his actions, a search that surfaces the existence of a missing sister, August, and a web of old secrets bound up in geasa that keep other characters.
