Synopsis

In a world where an industrial revolution runs on magic, archaeology student Tyen unearths Vella, a sentient book that was once a young sorcerer-bookbinder transformed centuries earlier and who holds knowledge of a coming catastrophe. Meanwhile Rielle, a dyer's daughter in a land ruled by priests who teach that using magic is sinful, discovers she has a natural gift for it and must decide whether to accept forbidden instruction. Their separate stories begin to challenge everything both have been taught about magic, law, and the authorities who enforce them.
