Synopsis
The seventh short-story anthology in the Valdemar series collects sixteen stories and one essay exploring the kingdom's Heralds, an ancient order drawn from all walks of life who are bonded to telepathic, horse-like Companions and ride circuit throughout the land to protect the peace. Contributors include Mercedes Lackey, who provides an original novella, alongside established genre writers such as Tanya Huff, Fiona Patton, and Mickey Zucker Reichert, plus numerous other authors. As in the rest of the anthology series, the stories are independent of one another, following different Heralds and other Valdemar residents as they face threats, solve problems, and take on the duties expected of their gifts, several continuing character arcs and miniseries begun in previous volumes rather than forming one continuous plot.
