Synopsis
Wild Magic is the first book in Tamora Pierce's Immortals quartet, introducing thirteen-year-old Veralidaine "Daine" Sarrasri, an orphan from Galla whose family died in a raid she survived by unleashing an unexplained wild power. Fleeing her old life, Daine finds work as an assistant to Onua, horsemistress of Tortall's Queen's Riders, and travels with her toward the capital, Corus. Along the way it becomes clear that Daine's gift is wild magic, letting her speak to, calm, and eventually take the shape of animals. When she and Onua encounter Immortals, dangerous magical creatures long sealed away and now breaking free into the mortal world, Daine's powers draw the attention of Numair Salmalin, Tortall's most formidable mage, who takes her on as a student. In Corus, Daine must master her abilities while the growing presence of Immortals threatens the kingdom.
