Synopsis
Wolfhound, published in 1995, opens among the Grey Dog clan, whose settlement is destroyed in a massacre during the hero's childhood. Taken as a slave, the boy who will become known as Wolfhound is sent to labor in the mines of the Emerald Mountains, a place from which no one has ever escaped alive. Through sheer will he becomes the only slave ever to break free of the mines by his own effort, emerging transformed into a formidable warrior. The novel, rooted in Slavic mythology and Russian and Norse pagan tradition, follows Wolfhound afterward as he makes his way through a world of feuding peoples and old grudges, acting less as a conventional adventurer than as a protector of the weak, while the losses of his childhood continue to shape who he chooses to become.
