Overview

Wolfhound is a Russian-language fantasy sequence by Maria Semyonova, following Volkodav, a slave-turned-warrior seeking revenge in a Slavic-inflected fantasy world of forests, river towns, and old gods. A foundational work of modern Russian fantasy, with a wide media afterlife including a feature film adaptation. Drawing exclusively on Russian and Slavic mythology rather than the Western sword-and-sorcery template, Semyonova deliberately shaped Volkodav as a protector of the weak rather than a conqueror-adventurer, a conscious counterpoint to Robert E. Howard's Conan, and interleaved the narrative with her own original poetry. The debut novel, published in 1995, was an immediate commercial success that enabled the publication of her earlier historical fiction and spawned four further Wolfhound novels through 2003, plus later multi-author tie-in projects. It won the 1996 Belyaev Prize, and the franchise expanded into a 2007 feature film, a television series, and a 2006 video game, cementing Semyonova's standing as a major voice in Russian fantasy.
