Synopsis

Twardokęsek is an ageing bandit who has had enough of life on the road. He robs his own companions of the gang's treasure and slips away with the loot, meaning to retire somewhere quiet in the south. His plan goes wrong almost at once: he is caught, thrown into prison and sentenced to death. Elsewhere in the story he reaches the island of the goddess Zaraźnica, where in a tavern he becomes an unwilling witness to blasphemous talk. The book opens the saga set in the Lands of the Inner Sea, a world where gods, princes, rebels and outlaws all pursue their own interests. It follows a reluctant, sharp-tongued rogue who keeps being pulled into matters far larger than his own wish for a peaceful old age.
