Overview

Jess Teoh, a recent Harvard graduate trailing her parents back to Malaysia after a shaky start to adult life, discovers she can hear the voice of her dead grandmother, a medium once possessed by a fierce local deity known as the Black Water Sister. Dragged into the god's unfinished business with a gangster-turned-property-developer, Jess must navigate Penang's temples, hungry ghosts, and her own family's buried secrets, all while closeted to a family she isn't sure will accept her. A contemporary supernatural family drama grounded in Malaysian Chinese religion and folk belief, and Zen Cho's second admitted universe, a wholly separate continuity from the Regency-era Sorcerer to the Crown.
