Overview
A young-adult paranormal-romance novel following Vivian, a teenage loup-garoux (werewolf), as she navigates a forbidden romance with a human boy while her pack faces the fallout of an earlier exposure. Annette Curtis Klause's Blood and Chocolate (1997) was named an American Library Association Best Book for Young Adults and a Michael L. Printz Honor Book, recognition that helped establish it as a foundational text of the YA werewolf and paranormal-romance boom that followed it in the following decade. The novel treats Vivian's pack as a close-knit, secretive community with its own hierarchy and customs distinct from human society, and centers much of its tension on the danger and appeal of crossing that boundary for love. It was later loosely adapted into a 2007 feature film that relocated and altered much of the source novel's plot.
