Overview

The Dragon King Trilogy is Stephen R. Lawhead's debut work, an Arthurian-inspired epic fantasy set in the secondary kingdom of Mensandor. It opens with In the Hall of the Dragon King (1982), in which Quentin, a temple acolyte, is sent to deliver an urgent message to the ailing king and is drawn into a struggle against the ambitious Prince Jaspin and the sorcerer Nimrood. The second volume, The Warlords of Nin (1983), jumps a decade ahead as Quentin, now the king's designated successor, faces the invading warlord Nin and an old prophecy unfolding around him. The Sword and the Flame (1984) closes the trilogy as Quentin, now reigning as Dragon King, confronts Nimrood's return and a string of personal losses. Written for a Christian publishing house early in Lawhead's career, the trilogy predates his later, better-known Pendragon Cycle and Song of Albion, and shares their blend of mythic adventure and quest-driven coming-of-age storytelling.
