Stephen R. Lawhead is an American author of fantasy and historical fiction, born July 2, 1950, in Kearney, Nebraska. He graduated from Kearney High School in 1968 and earned a Bachelor of Arts in Art from Kearney State College in 1973, later studying at Northern Baptist Theological Seminary and taking writing courses at Wheaton College. He began his career as an editor and staff writer for Campus Life magazine for five years, then managed the Christian rock band DeGarmo and Key and founded Ariel Records before that label's closure in 1981 redirected him toward fiction writing. Lawhead's major series include the Dragon King trilogy (1982–1984), The Pendragon Cycle (1987–1999), a Celtic reinterpretation of Arthurian legend, the Song of Albion trilogy (1991–1993), The Celtic Crusades (1998–2001), and the King Raven Trilogy, a Welsh retelling of the Robin Hood legend beginning in 2006. Notable standalone novels include Byzantium (1996) and Patrick: Son of Ireland (2003). He won the Gold Medallion Award for Fiction in 1988 for Taliesin and the Christy Award for Visionary Fiction in 2008 for Scarlet, and received an honorary doctorate from the University of Nebraska at Kearney in 2003.
