Overview

The Mitsuko books are young adult historical fantasies by Kara Dalkey, published by Harcourt in 1996 and 1998. They are set in twelfth-century Heian Japan and draw on Japanese and Buddhist mythology. In Little Sister, Mitsuko, a thirteen-year-old Fujiwara noblewoman, enters the land of the dead to recover the soul of her sister Amaiko after a raid on their home, guided by Goranu, a shape-shifting tengu. In The Heavenward Path, set two years later, Mitsuko is training to become a nun when a ghost-king demands that his shrine be rebuilt, while her father plans to marry her to a young prince. The two novels form a duology; a review notes that the ending leaves room for a sequel, but none has been published.
