Overview
Amber McBride’s 2025 young-adult novel-in-verse takes place over four minutes in the Leaving Room, a small room with no windows or doors through which every young person must pass after death. Gospel, its Keeper, gathers each child’s best memory into a jar on shelves made from living trees and helps their souls move on, until another Keeper, Melodee, breaks the rules by entering her room. Its chapters are named after the five stages of grief. It was a finalist for the 2025 National Book Award for Young People’s Literature and the 2026 Mythopoeic Award.
