Overview
Tales from the Flat Earth is Tanith Lee's cycle of interlinked, Arabian Nights-inspired dark mythic fantasies about the Lords of Darkness who rule a legendary flat world in an age before humanity as it is known today. Beginning with Night's Master (1978), which follows the demon lord Azhrarn as he takes an interest in, and ruins, the life of a mortal man he raises as his own, the five books move between different demon lords and mortal protagonists across a shared cosmology of vast, capricious powers -- Death, Delusion, Delirium among them -- who treat human lives as playthings. Death's Master (1979) and Delusion's Master (1981) continue the pattern, while Delirium's Mistress (1986) and Night's Sorceries (1987) extend the cycle further and begin drawing its threads together. Lee wrote the sequence in a deliberately ornate, fable-like prose style closer to myth-retelling than conventional novel narration, and it is widely regarded as one of the more distinctive achievements of 1970s-80s mythic fantasy for its moral ambiguity and its refusal to give any of its god-like characters a straightforward heroic or villainous role.
