Overview

E. Nesbit's Psammead books, also known as the Five Children books, follow the siblings Cyril, Anthea, Robert, Jane and their baby brother, the Lamb, who discover in a Kentish gravel pit a grumpy, ugly, ancient sand-fairy, the Psammead, compelled to grant them one wish a day that lasts until sunset, with comically disastrous results. In the second book an enchanted egg in an old carpet hatches into a splendid golden Phoenix, and the magic carpet carries the children wherever they wish; in the third, back in London, they rescue the Psammead and, with half of an ancient amulet, travel through time in search of the other half, as far as the days of Julius Caesar. First serialised in The Strand Magazine and illustrated by H. R. Millar, the books are among the founding works of modern children's fantasy.
