Overview
Magisterium is a complete five-book middle-grade series co-written by Holly Black and Cassandra Clare, following a boy who tries to fail the entrance trial to a magical school and ends up attending anyway, across a school year sequence with a darker turn than its setup suggests. Twelve-year-old Callum Hunt enrolls at the underground Magisterium academy, where apprentice mages train to control the four classical elements and where a small number of rare students, called Makars, can also wield unstable chaos magic, only to discover he secretly carries the soul of Constantine Madden, a powerful chaos mage his own father fought to defeat. Published between 2014 and 2018, the series was praised on release for its refreshingly nuanced characters and its willingness to escalate moral complexity and darkness as Call's dual identity is gradually revealed; film rights were acquired by a European studio in 2012.
