Synopsis
The book begins with Call imprisoned in the Panopticon after his identity as the reincarnated Enemy of Death, Constantine Madden, is revealed to the wider magical world. Held apart from Aaron, Tamara, and his other allies, Call is manipulated by Master Joseph, who forces him to attempt a dangerous ritual meant to bring back the dead using forbidden magic. Around him, the Magisterium and its mages brace for a Fourth Mage War, with old fears of the Enemy of Death resurfacing and shaping how everyone, including people Call once trusted, now treats him. Isolated and uncertain who still believes in him, Call must find a way to prove his intentions while the conflict he is blamed for starting threatens to consume the school.
