Overview
In a post-apocalyptic future Sahara, a child of genocidal rape, Onyesonwu, comes into a fearsome inherited sorcery and sets out to confront the father who conceived her as a weapon, in a world split along a light-skinned-versus-dark-skinned caste line enforced with both magic and violence. The Book of Phoenix, a prequel, traces the earlier legend of Sola/the Phoenix that recurs as myth within Onyesonwu's own story. Publisher and award consensus (a World Fantasy Award win) place this Africanfuturist, science-fantasy setting as fantasy for this canon's purposes, per the same genre-boundary-transparency convention already applied to Pern.

Rule: Core Canon = 2 novels: Who Fears Death (2010), the original novel, and The Book of Phoenix (2015), an explicit prequel; publication order is reversed from internal chronology, noted on each book rather than resolved into a single reading order. Expanded Canon = the She Who Knows prequel novella trilogy (2024-2026), following Onyesonwu's mother Najeeba, now fully published.
