Gu Long (born Xiong Yaohua, 7 June 1938, Hong Kong; died 21 September 1985, Taipei) was a Taiwanese novelist, screenwriter, film producer and director. He studied at Tamkang University and published his first wuxia novel, Cangqiong Shenjian, in 1960 under the pen name Gu Long. From 1967 he became one of the leading wuxia writers of his time and is counted with Jin Yong and Liang Yusheng as one of the three pillars of the genre. His style is marked by short sentences and paragraphs and a large amount of dialogue, like a stage script, and he drew on writers such as Hemingway and Nietzsche and on films such as James Bond and The Godfather rather than on Chinese history and philosophy. In the 1980s he founded a film studio to adapt his own works. Illness in his later years led him to use ghostwriters for some books. He died of complications of cirrhosis.
