H. A. Clarke studied at the University of Chicago, where their work focused on themes of queerness, labor, and monstrosity, interests that carry through into their fiction. Their short fiction has appeared in literary journals including PRISM International, Portland Review, and Eidolon. In 2019 they received a Lambda Literary Fellowship for Young Adult Fiction, and their work has also been a finalist for the Locus Award, the Dragon Award, and the Pushcart Prize. Clarke is best known as the author of The Scapegracers trilogy, a young adult fantasy series about a coven of teenage witches that blends horror, queer identity, and dark humor, published under the H. A. Clarke name by Erewhon Books. Clarke identifies as queer and uses both he and they pronouns. Their writing has been noted for centering marginalized and monstrous characters and for its unconventional approach to witchcraft as a metaphor for chosen family and social belonging, establishing Clarke as a distinctive voice in contemporary young adult speculative fiction.
