Synopsis
The second novel in the Scapegracers series picks up after Sideways Pike's coven has formed, when Sideways suffers a devastating betrayal: Madeline Kline, a rival witch, steals her specter, the magical soul that anchors her power. Cut off from the source of her own magic and unwilling to lean on her coven and closest friends for help, Sideways sets out largely on her own to track Madeline down and recover what was taken from her. The pursuit forces her to confront both the practical mechanics of specter magic and her own instinct toward isolation, as she navigates unfamiliar magical territory outside the protection of the found family she has only recently gained. The novel continues the series' focus on queer identity, self-discovery, and the bonds of chosen family under pressure.
