James Islington is an Australian fantasy author based on the Mornington Peninsula in Victoria, where he lives with his wife and two children. Before turning to writing full-time, he ran a technology startup, and began writing seriously in his thirties, initially self-publishing his debut novel in 2014 before signing with a traditional publisher. He is best known for The Licanius Trilogy, comprising The Shadow of What Was Lost (2014), An Echo of Things to Come (2017), and The Light of All That Falls (2019), and for the Hierarchy series, which opened with The Will of the Many in 2023 and continued with The Strength of the Few in 2025, with a further volume planned. The Strength of the Few reached the top of audiobook listening charts across multiple fantasy categories on release, and in November 2025 Sony Pictures acquired film rights to adapt the Hierarchy series.
