Jonathan Anthony Stroud was born on October 27, 1970, in Bedford, England, and grew up in St Albans, where he still lives with his wife and three children. He studied English literature at the University of York, where he was a member of Vanbrugh College, and worked afterward as an editor at the London publisher Walker Books before becoming a full-time novelist. His work focuses on fantasy for children and young adults, most notably The Bartimaeus Sequence, a four-book series that examines class and power through the relationship between a boy magician and an ancient djinni, and Lockwood & Co., a five-book series about a ghost-hunting agency that was adapted for television by Netflix beginning in 2021. He also wrote the Outlaws Scarlett and Browne trilogy. The Bartimaeus books have won the Grand Prix de l'Imaginaire and a Mythopoeic Fantasy Award, and several of his titles have received American Library Association and Boston Globe-Horn Book honors.
