K. S. Villoso is a Filipino-Canadian fantasy author born in Albay, in the Bicol region of the Philippines, who spent her formative years in Taguig, near Manila, in a low-income neighborhood adjacent to a military base, before immigrating to Canada as a teenager. She now lives in Anmore, British Columbia. Villoso has described developing her love of storytelling early, driven in part by limited access to books during her childhood, and has balanced her writing career with motherhood alongside work in civil design and construction throughout her life. She describes her fiction as "weird, intense, character-driven fantasy stories," often centered on broken systems, structures, and people navigating the aftermath of political and personal upheaval. Her best-known work is the Chronicles of the Bitch Queen series, beginning with The Wolf of Oren-Yaro, an epic fantasy following a disgraced warrior queen forced to reclaim her throne and reputation amid court intrigue and civil war; the series is notable for its morally complex, unglamorous protagonist and unflinching depiction of political violence. She has also written the Dageian Puppetmaster duology (also published as The Outlaw Mage) and the Legacy of the Lost Mage and Blackwood Marauders series, with recent titles including Shattered Mage. Villoso's fiction is distinguished within contemporary epic fantasy for its grounded, often grim realism and its roots in Southeast Asian-inspired settings and cultural texture, drawn directly from her own upbringing and heritage.
