Kate Griffin is the pen name under which the British novelist Catherine Webb, born in London on 27 April 1986, writes fantasy for adults. Webb completed a first novel, Mirror Dreams, at fourteen; it was published in 2002 and opened a career in young-adult fantasy that included the Horatio Lyle mysteries and a Carnegie Medal nomination. After reading history at the London School of Economics and studying at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art, Webb took the Kate Griffin name for a first adult fantasy, A Madness of Angels (2009), which Kirkus called a very promising start, and followed it with three more Matthew Swift novels and the two Magicals Anonymous books set in the same London. As Claire North, Webb writes speculative fiction, beginning with The First Fifteen Lives of Harry August (2014).
