Liliana Bodoc was an Argentine fantasy writer born July 21, 1958, in Santa Fe Province, Argentina, and raised largely in Mendoza after her family relocated there when she was five. She earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Literature from the Universidad Nacional de Cuyo in Mendoza. Bodoc is best known for La Saga de los Confines, a fantasy trilogy first published in Spanish beginning in 2000 and translated into English starting with The Days of the Deer, which drew on pre-Columbian and Latin American mythologies rather than the medieval European traditions common to much fantasy literature. Her fiction achieved substantial popularity across Latin America and helped establish a distinctly regional voice within the fantasy genre. Her work earned the admiration of celebrated American author Ursula K. Le Guin, who died only weeks after Bodoc's own death. Raised in an atheist household, Bodoc converted to Islam in 1994, a shift that informed her worldview and writing. She died February 6, 2018, at the age of 59, leaving behind a body of work that remains influential in Spanish-language fantasy literature and continues to be studied for its incorporation of indigenous American mythological traditions into the genre.
