Moniquill Blackgoose is an American fantasy novelist and an enrolled member of the Seaconke Wampanoag Tribe, with ancestry tracing to Ousamequin Massasoit. She writes young adult and adult fantasy fiction published by Del Rey Books. Her debut novel, To Shape a Dragon's Breath (2023), is the first installment of a planned trilogy called Books of Nampeshiweisit; it follows Anequs, a protagonist from an Indigenous community inspired by northeastern coastal woodland peoples, who enrolls at a dragon-riding academy run by Viking colonizers, using the fantastical premise to explore colonization and cultural survival. The novel won the 2023 Andre Norton Award and the 2024 Lodestar Award, marking a strong critical reception for a debut. A sequel, To Ride a Rising Storm, was published in January 2026, continuing Anequs's story. Blackgoose has cited a wide range of influences on her writing, including Mary Shelley, Jane Austen, Ursula K. Le Guin, Octavia Butler, Anne McCaffrey, Naomi Novik, and Terry Pratchett, reflecting a blend of classic literary and genre-fantasy touchstones in her approach to world-building and character.
