Synopsis

On the remote island of Masquapaug, fifteen-year-old Anequs, a young woman of the Indigenous Masquisit people, finds a dragon's egg on the beach and bonds with the hatchling she names Kasaqua, becoming a Nampeshiweisit, a dragon-bonded person, a role her people have not seen in generations under Anglish colonial rule. The Anglish authorities who govern her land maintain strict, discriminatory rules over who may raise a dragon, and Anequs is only grudgingly allowed to enroll in a prestigious mainland academy for dragoneers. There she must master difficult skills, including the dangerous art of guiding her dragon's breath to break matter apart, while facing open prejudice from students and staff who see her and her culture as inferior, all while trying to keep Kasaqua and prove she belongs.

Publication order and internal chronology are tracked as two separate orderings and are never conflated: a book's place in one says nothing about its place in the other.
