Oliver Darkshire is a British bookseller and memoirist who works at Henry Sotheran Ltd, one of the world's oldest antiquarian bookshops, founded in 1761 and based on Sackville Street in London. He joined the shop for what he initially intended as a year-long apprenticeship into a 'less dusty, better remunerated career,' but was drawn in permanently by, as he has put it, the alluring smell of old books and the shop's eccentric institutional culture, and has remained there ever since, eventually specializing in the handling of rare first editions and the idiosyncratic customer relationships that define the antiquarian trade. He lives in Manchester with his husband and an extensive personal book collection. His debut book, Once Upon a Tome: The Misadventures of a Rare Bookseller (2023), is a memoir recounting his apprenticeship and career at Sotheran's, narrated with the sardonic wit and self-deprecating candor that reviewers, including Fine Books Magazine, have singled out as his signature voice. The book became an instant national bestseller and was shortlisted for the 2023 Non-Obvious Book Award, and was praised by the Minneapolis Star Tribune as 'witty, literary and very funny.' Darkshire's writing offers a rare insider's account of the antiquarian book trade, illuminating both its rituals and its oddities for a general audience.
