Russell Kirkpatrick was born in 1961 in Christchurch, New Zealand, and developed an early passion for mapmaking during primary school; he was reportedly noted in the 1990s for owning New Zealand's largest collection of Lego. He earned a PhD in geography from the University of Canterbury in 1991 and worked as a geography lecturer at the University of Waikato from 2000 to 2014 and later at the University of Canberra from 2022 to 2026, alongside work as a cartographer and photographer contributing to multiple atlases, including serving as deputy editor of the New Zealand Historical Atlas (1998) and authoring the Contemporary Atlas of New Zealand (1999). His epic fantasy debut, Across the Face of the World, the first book of the Fire of Heaven trilogy (2004-2006), became the best-selling fantasy novel in Australia in 2004 and in the United States in 2008. He followed it with the Husk trilogy (2006-2009), also published in some English-language markets as the Broken Man trilogy. Kirkpatrick won the Sir Julius Vogel Award for best adult novel three times, for Path of Revenge (2008), Dark Heart (2009), and Beyond the Wall of Time (2010). He died on June 26, 2026, from complications of melanoma. His fantasy fiction was noted for its unusually meticulous geographic and cartographic worldbuilding, a direct reflection of his academic career.
