Sam Sykes, born Sam Watkins, is an American epic fantasy novelist and the son of Outlander author Diana Gabaldon and Doug Watkins. He publishes under the name Sam Sykes. His debut trilogy, the Aeons' Gate series, began with Tome of the Undergates (2010) and continued through two further volumes; it drew mixed critical reception, with reviewers praising its characterization, dialogue, and deconstruction of standard epic fantasy tropes while criticizing what some saw as a meandering, derivative plot. He went on to write the Bring Down Heaven series and the Grave of Empires series, and returned to more overtly genre-subversive work with Seven Blades in Black (2019) and its sequels, which follow a disgraced magic-user seeking revenge against the mages who betrayed her. In 2020, multiple authors publicly accused Sykes of inappropriate behavior toward them at genre conventions; he issued a public apology acknowledging the harm caused by his misconduct, and his longtime publisher, Orbit Books, announced it would cease acquiring new work from him and withdraw publication support. Sykes remains a notable, if controversial, figure in contemporary epic fantasy, known for irreverent, self-aware prose and genre-savvy worldbuilding.
