Stephanie Garber was born on July 8, 1987, in the United States. Before becoming a full-time novelist, she worked as a college resident director while writing in her spare time, completing several manuscripts and facing numerous rejections along the way; her fourth manuscript, a space opera, attracted a literary agent's interest but ultimately failed to sell, prompting her to pivot toward the project that became her breakthrough. That project, Caraval (2017), launched a trilogy that also included Legendary (2018) and Finale (2019); Caraval received a starred Publishers Weekly review and spent 15 weeks on The New York Times Best Seller list, peaking at number two, while Legendary reached number one, and film rights were optioned by Twentieth Century Fox. Garber went on to write the Once Upon a Broken Heart trilogy—Once Upon a Broken Heart (2021), The Ballad of Never After (2022), and A Curse for True Love (2023)—with The Ballad of Never After spending sixteen weeks on the bestseller list, as well as the standalone 26 Witches (2020) and the novella Spectacular (2024). Her lushly imagined, fairy-tale-inflected fantasy worlds have earned her a devoted readership, even as critics have offered mixed assessments of her prose and plotting alongside praise for her inventive worldbuilding.
