Theodora Goss is a Hungarian-American author of fantasy, magic realism, and poetry, born September 30, 1968, in Budapest, Hungary, and raised in the United States after her family immigrated when she was a child. She earned a BA from the University of Virginia, a JD from Harvard Law School, and an MA and PhD in English from Boston University, and is a graduate of both the Odyssey and Clarion writing workshops. Since 2002 she has worked as a writer and educator, teaching at Boston University and in the Stonecoast MFA Program in Creative Writing, specializing in fantasy, magic realism, fairy tales, and poetry. Goss is best known for The Extraordinary Adventures of the Athena Club trilogy, beginning with The Strange Case of the Alchemist's Daughter (2017), which reimagines the daughters and creations of classic Gothic literary monsters — including Frankenstein's creation and Dr. Jekyll's alter ego — as a band of investigators; the trilogy continues with European Travel for the Monstrous Gentlewoman (2018) and The Sinister Mystery of the Mesmerizing Girl (2019). Her short story collection In the Forest of Forgetting appeared in 2006. She has won the Rhysling Award for Best Long Poem in 2004 and 2017, and the World Fantasy Award for Best Short Fiction in 2008 for 'Singing of Mount Abora,' alongside numerous nominations for the Nebula, Locus, Mythopoeic, Shirley Jackson, and Hugo Awards.
