Synopsis

Pierce Moffett, a middle-aged history professor grown disillusioned with his academic career, abandons it to retreat to the pastoral Faraway Hills region, where he sets out on an ambitious independent project blending historical research, speculation about Renaissance Hermetic philosophy, and the imaginative mythology he constructed as a child. Settling into the quiet countryside, Pierce becomes drawn into researching the life and ideas of a reclusive, historically significant fantasy novelist connected to the region, whose papers and unpublished writings hint at a deeper, possibly real connection between historical occult thought and the fictional worlds Pierce has spent his life studying and imagining, a connection he becomes determined to trace.
