Overview
The Ægypt Cycle is a completed four-volume literary fantasy sequence in which a historian researching the Renaissance hermeticist John Dee uncovers evidence that human history has secretly passed through several different sets of natural law, each remembered only imperfectly by the next. Historian Pierce Moffett's contemporary life in the American tri-state region is woven together with Renaissance-era chapters concerning Dee, Giordano Bruno, and Edward Kelley, with John Crowley structuring the whole sequence around the twelve astrological houses. AEgypt (1987, revised 2007 as The Solitudes), Love & Sleep (1994), Daemonomania (2000) and Endless Things (2007) follow the same small cast across decades as the boundary between one world's rules and the next comes into question. Harold Bloom included the first two volumes in his 1993 Western canon, and both were finalists for the World Fantasy Award, with critic Michael Dirda calling the completed cycle confirmation that Crowley is "one of our finest living writers."
