Synopsis

Daemonomania continues Pierce Moffett's ongoing work on his book about Renaissance Hermeticism, even as his personal life grows increasingly strained by his relationship with Rosie Ryder, who becomes drawn toward an authoritarian Christian group known as the Powerhouse. Woven alongside Pierce's present-day struggles are Renaissance-era accounts of the historical magicians John Dee and Edward Kelley pursuing occult knowledge in Prague, whose reported encounters with possession and sorcery are presented as having helped harden both religious and scientific attitudes of their era into greater rigidity. As Pierce watches Rosie slip further under the Powerhouse's influence, his intellectual fascination with historical magic increasingly collides with the more painful reality unfolding in his own relationships.
