John Crowley (December 1, 1942 – August 8, 2026) was an American author of fantasy, science fiction, and historical fiction, born in Presque Isle, Maine, and educated at Indiana University. Before establishing himself as a novelist, he worked as a documentary filmmaker and screenwriter, and in 1989 co-founded the production company Straight Ahead Pictures with his wife, Laurie Block. From 1993 he taught creative writing at Yale University and also taught at the Clarion West Writers' Workshop. Crowley is best known for Little, Big (1981), an intricate fantasy about a family living on the border between the everyday world and Faerie, which literary critic Harold Bloom called 'a neglected masterpiece.' His other major work is the four-volume Ægypt sequence — The Solitudes, Love & Sleep, Dæmonomania, and Endless Things — a sweeping novel of hidden histories and alternate cosmologies. Additional notable titles include Engine Summer (1979), Four Freedoms (2009), Ka: Dar Oakley in the Ruin of Ymr (2017), and Flint and Mirror (2022). Crowley won the World Fantasy Award for Best Novel for Little, Big in 1982 and received the World Fantasy Award for Life Achievement in 2006, along with the Mythopoeic Fantasy Award in 1982 and 2018, an award from the American Academy and Institute of Arts and Letters in 1992, and an Edgar Award in 2018. He died in Conway, Massachusetts, in 2026, at age 83.
