Synopsis

Love and Sleep continues Pierce Moffett's story as he pursues his long-held theory that the world has undergone fundamental historical transformations, periods in which the basic rules governing reality, including whether magic and alchemy actually function, have shifted more than once. While researching papers left behind by a novelist he loved as a child, Pierce uncovers an unpublished sixteenth-century manuscript that appears to lend unexpected support to this theory. The discovery ripples outward to affect several people around him, including a woman he grows close to, a child dealing with epilepsy, and a dying man in search of the philosopher's stone, entangling Pierce's historical research with the more immediate, unresolved lives of those nearest to him.
