Synopsis

Lester Furnival, a young woman, finds herself on Westminster Bridge in a still and silent London, after she and her friend Evelyn have been killed when an aeroplane crashed. Evelyn refuses to accept what has happened and complains constantly, while Lester slowly begins to understand where they are. In the living world, Lester's husband Richard visits his friend, the painter Jonathan Drayton, who is engaged to Betty, a former schoolmate of Lester. Betty's mother belongs to the following of Simon Leclerc, a charismatic religious leader who has recently come back from America. Jonathan's portrait of Simon unsettles the household. The two worlds, of the dead and the living, begin to draw together around him.
