Synopsis
In Battle Hill, a suburb on the edge of London, a group of local people is preparing a new verse play by the poet Peter Stanhope. The hill seems to lie at a crossing of times, and figures from the past appear there. Pauline Anstruther, a young woman, has been haunted since childhood by the sight of her own double and dreads meeting it. Meanwhile a military historian advising on the staging is haunted by a presence that tempts him. The novel follows these people as the hill's strange pull works on each of them.
