Charles Walter Stansby Williams (1886-1945) was an English poet, novelist, playwright, theologian and literary critic. Born in Islington, London, he grew up in modest circumstances and moved to St Albans as a child. He won a scholarship to University College London but left in 1904 without a degree because he could not afford the fees. In 1908 he joined Oxford University Press as a proofreader and rose to become an editor; among his achievements there was the first major English-language edition of Kierkegaard. He married Florence Conway in 1917. When the Press moved to Oxford during the Second World War in 1939, he moved with it and worked there until his death in 1945. A committed Anglican, he belonged to the Inklings, the Oxford circle around C. S. Lewis and J. R. R. Tolkien. Besides the seven supernatural novels, which T. S. Eliot called supernatural thrillers, he wrote Arthurian poetry, including Taliessin through Logres (1938), plays, biographies, and theological works such as He Came Down from Heaven (1938), The Descent of the Dove (1939) and Witchcraft (1941). He is buried in Holywell Cemetery, Oxford.
