Synopsis

In a small town in Hertfordshire, the eternal archetypes that Plato described as Platonic forms begin to appear in the physical world as animals and other living shapes. The first to arrive is a lion. The events centre on the home of Mr Berringer, who leads a circle of people interested in magical symbolism and who falls into a coma after contact with the lion. Other powers follow, and as they take hold of people in the neighbourhood they bring out each person's strengths and failings. The town is gradually cut off from the outside world. The townspeople must decide how to respond as the ordinary order of nature starts to give way.
