Synopsis
Sir Giles Tumulty, an unscrupulous scholar and collector, obtains a stone once set in the crown of King Solomon. The stone has strange properties: it can be copied without losing any of its power, and whoever holds it can move through space and time. Tumulty and his stockbroker nephew, Reginald Montague, plan to examine and exploit it. Guardians of the stone, linked to the Persian embassy in London, regard such experiments as sacrilege. Others are drawn into the question of what should be done with an object that anyone can multiply and use. The book follows the people who handle the stone, and the temptations and logical hazards that come with it.
