Synopsis
In a London publishing house, a dead body is found in an office, and the police are baffled. The trail leads to Gregory Persimmons, a wealthy publisher who is quietly a practitioner of black magic. At the same time the archaeologist Sir Giles Tumulty has traced the Holy Grail to a chalice in the church of a sleepy village near London, Fardles. Persimmons wants it for his own dark purposes. Against him stand the village's Archdeacon, a mild Anglican priest, together with a small band of allies. As the rival parties converge on the little parish, the question is who will take possession of the cup and what each hopes to do with it. The story mixes detective-story pacing with church ritual and occult menace.
