Overview

Charles Williams (1886-1945), an English writer and member of the Inklings, published seven supernatural novels between 1930 and 1945. Each is a separate story set in the modern world, where the magical breaks into English life. In War in Heaven a group contests the Holy Grail; Many Dimensions centres on a stone from Solomon's crown; The Place of the Lion has Platonic archetypes appear in a Hertfordshire town; The Greater Trumps concerns the original tarot deck; Shadows of Ecstasy follows a man who defies death and stirs a rising in Africa; Descent into Hell is set around a play; All Hallows' Eve follows two women after death. The books do not form a continuous series, though Sir Giles Tumulty appears in two.
