Synopsis

Aurian is the daughter of two renegade Mages, sent as a young woman to the city of Nexis to train at its Academy. There she is caught in a struggle between the Archmage Miathan, who rules the Mages, and the ordinary people of the city. When a fire uncovers the first of four lost Artefacts of Power, magical weapons once held by the old Magefolk, Aurian has to flee. With her loyal servant Anvar she travels south into the Southern Kingdoms to find out where the Artefacts came from and where the others lie, while Miathan, once her teacher, sets out to hunt her down and take them for himself.
