Synopsis

Bruja Born, published by Zoraida Cordova in 2018, is the second novel of the Brooklyn Brujas trilogy, shifting focus to Alex's older sister Lula. Months after the events of the first book, Lula's boyfriend Maks is killed in a sudden accident, and rather than accept his death, Lula and her sisters attempt a spell to bring him back. The magic works, but not cleanly: Maks returns changed, and the ritual disturbs the natural boundary between life and death in ways the sisters did not anticipate, drawing the attention of Lady de la Muerte, death's own guardian, who is not so easily defied. As the consequences of their intervention spread beyond Maks alone, Lula is forced to confront both the cost of the bargain she struck and her own guilt over what she has unleashed, in a darker, more consequence-driven story than the first book.

Notes

  • From the series record (Brooklyn Brujas): YA urban fantasy inspired by the author's Ecuadorian heritage, following a Latin American brujeria family in Brooklyn across three books, each narrated by a different sister.
