Overview
Brooklyn Brujas follows the Mortiz family, brujas (witches) descended from Ecuadorian magic-practicing ancestors, living in modern Brooklyn. Each of the trilogy's three novels -- Labyrinth Lost (2016), Bruja Born (2018), and Wayward Witch (2020) -- is narrated by a different sister as she discovers and comes into her own power, drawing directly on author Zoraida Córdova's own Ecuadorian heritage and Latin American brujería tradition. Labyrinth Lost follows the eldest sister's accidental banishment of her family to Los Lagos, a perilous magical realm she must cross to bring them home, while the later books shift focus to her younger sisters' own coming-of-age struggles with inherited power. The trilogy was among the earlier prominent examples of Latin American brujería explicitly centered as a young-adult fantasy magic system rather than folkloric background detail.
