Synopsis

Seventeen-year-old Countess Meliara Astiar and her older brother Bran promise their dying father to protect their lands and people from the greed of King Galdran. When Galdran's taxes and soldiers threaten the countryside, Mel gathers farmers and tradespeople into a rebel force and takes the war to the crown. She is captured by the king's cool, elegant ally the Marquis of Shevraeth, escapes, and must decide whether the man she distrusts may be less of an enemy than she thinks. Written first as a single story, the book was published in two parts, with the war in the first and the aftermath at court in the second.
