Synopsis

A mutilated body is found in the harbour of the ancient city of Askir. The dead man is Jenks, a servant from an embassy, who had no reason to be in such a rough district. Staff Lieutenant Santer leads the investigation, helped by the magician Desina, who can bring past events back to life before her eyes. What she sees of the night of the murder points to a threat to the whole city. The enemy works with black magic, and Desina's own powers are not enough to counter it.

Notes

  • First published in May 2009 as a standalone novel; numbered as volume 6 of the cycle since 2015. An uncut edition appeared in 2016.
  • From the series record (Das Geheimnis von Askir): Seven novels (2006-2010) following Havald and Leandra's search for the lost realm of Askir and the fight against the tyrant of Thalak.

Publication order and internal chronology are tracked as two separate orderings and are never conflated: a book's place in one says nothing about its place in the other.
